We know the summer weather was not brilliant this year but children in Toton took it to a whole new level by becoming Polar Explorers during Toton Churches’ summer holiday club. With huskies, sledges, penguins and an igloo, made from thousands of plastic milk bottles, around 80 children aged 5-11 attended each day. In addition, around 40 under 5s, accompanied by parents and carers, met at Toton Methodist Church to explore a wide range of icy, wet and cold play activities, indoor and out, and enjoy stories, singing and refreshment.
The 5-11s spent time in Husky Groups learning about Peter, Paul, Stephen and Timothy from the bible showing them that nobody is too ordinary, too bad, too young or makes too many mistakes to be part of God’s team. Children chose to go outdoors to the Fitness Zone, or move between the Survival Zone, Construction Zone and the Science Zone. They also visited the Ice Café serving polar themed items or had some table top play amongst the icebergs! Lynne Pearson, Children and Families Coordinator at Toton Churches, commented: ‘We were amazed how well all the children – even our 5 year olds - made choices for themselves, moved freely between activities and took themselves off for some quiet time in the café where others were on hand to have a chat.’
Songs, led by the live band, games, jokes and challenges rounded off the morning plus the appearance of the weatherman, who got soaked, frozen, covered in snow and caught in a blizzard by the snow machine! The children’s voting for which leader would have to be the next day’s weatherman became more and more frenetic as the week went on!
The Friday Family Fun Evening attracted over 200 people to take part in activities like the Bare Foot Walk, toasting marshmallows, curling, team skiing, toboggans and the bouncy ice-palace. We served fish finger butties, iced drinks and had ice-cream parlour!
Please note that Holiday Zone will be taking a year off in 2016 (to make space for a different sort of Community event) – look out for its return in 2017 together with other Zone activities though the year.
